Many people are or start to be "concerned" about the current calamities, the poverty in our societies, the increasing gap in the distribution of wealth and access to opportunities, depending, very often on education, but also family background and ethnic groups, and, not to forget, the rise of extremism, the refugee crises across many parts of the world, etc. There is a lot of research (as well as many non-governmental, private initiatives) that covers or works actively in relation with these themes and topics and many researchers across disciplines point at these problems and possible consequences thereof. The idea of this seminar is that if we want to respond theoretically as well as practically, i.e. if we, as researchers, also want to propose "workable" solutions that can help to alleviate some of those problems with more or less immediate effect as well as longer term consequences, we need to do interdisciplinary research and throw more knowledge and tools and methods into one basket and see what we can get out of it. In this seminar, we therefore propose first of all to read and present some core texts in different disciplines such as economics, philosophy, anthropology and social design in particular with respect to questions related to wellbeing, social justice and the creation of fair institutions. The aim is also to analyse certain case studies of bottom-up movements or other private initiatives who aim to do things differently (within or outside the market or other social institutions) and to analyse their underlying ideas and social philosophies. We also want to get acquainted with different methodologies and epistemologies such that at the end of the seminar, we start to get equipped with particular tools and knowledge that may help to engage in interdisciplinary analysis of particular problem areas and be able to respond conceptually as well as practically.
